Cuttings: Starting the year 2014

  The moon is descending, and i am keen enough to try the first cuttings this year! First i take the cuttings. The sprouts are long enough to leave to leaf-pairs at the plant, and the cutting has 3 leaf-pairs. I do cut the bottom-most leaf-pair, thereby exposing that node. Then i reduce larger leaves with a sharp scissor. At last i truncate the exposed node with a sharp cut and put that part in root growth powder.   The small pots are already watered and drip-dry, and after stabing a hole with a stick i plant the cuttings.  ...

Fuchsia Dancing Flame – Fuchsia of the week 3/2014

   Fuchsia Dancing Flame: Californian beauty, loving sun. Mrs. A. Stubbs cross-breeded the both hybrids Novella and Applause, and the result is this lovely flower in exceptional orange hues. The outer petals show stripes in different shades. This swinging pattern caused her to choose the name Dancing Flame in 1981. And- of course- this Fuchsia belongs to the hybrids who fancy sunshine! The plant should be cut back in time to prevent long, stiff shoots without leaves and blossoms.                ...

Preparing the Propagation with Cuttings

Some of my Fuchsias in the greenhouse are sprouting rapidly. I have to start pinching, to grow the plants bushy and keep them from getting to widespreading. This is the right time to plant cuttings, other then waisting the cuts. Scince i read a few articles about that the best time to plant is the time of the descending moon, i will have to wait 3 more days to cut the plants. But i am quite impatient and looking forward to it! And these are some of the Fuchsias that are to be cut:   As a further preparation i have drilled holes in the...

Fuchsia Mission Bells – Fuchsia of the week 2/2014

Since the be beginning of the 2. calendar-week falls on Epiphany, i will dedicate a “solemnly” Fuchsia to this week: Mission Bells, bred by Walker & Jones from the USA, known since 1948. About the lineage i do not hold any knowledge, but about their performance: it flourishes splendous in the half-shade, does tolerate a few ours direct sunlight. The shoots are a bit rigid and should be supported to carry the weight of the blossoms and to stand the wind. The blossoms are quote bell-like, with a lovely bright colour. Do you...

New Fuchsias each Year?

New Fuchsias each Year?

Many years ago this was my opinion, scince the overwintering of plants like Fuchsias and Pelargonias was impossible and frustrating to me, the outcome annoying. In the meantime i became familiar with preparing the Fuchsias for the “hybernation” (you should Know!) and their accommodation during winter. I thought of “hybernation”- also to me some rest, but the busy Fuchsias do not comply with my opinion! Of course one has to see, that i grant them nearly ideal overwintering-conditions, scince my beloved husband built an...

Fuchsia Deep Purple- Fuchsia of the week 1/2014

The first week of the new year starts with a Fuchsia in a cold colour, wich is better positioned within the shade than the sun. The idea to choose this Fuchsia came to me becouse a scion of the last year, not cut back in autumn and kept in a warm place, is producing a blossom right now. Till this blossom is unusual small, nevertheless i do quite enjoy it!   This Fuchsia-hybrid is a breeding of Garrett, USA, 1989. The parents are ‘Blue Satin’ and ‘Quasar’. The blossom is of a striking dark-blue colour, seen at only...

Fuchsias = Shadow-Plants?

Fuchsias = Shadow-Plants?

This statement is to general and therefore false, but this opinion did possibly in many cases cause first contact of Fuchsia-passionates with these lovely plants.   Starting to try new locations with single Fuchsias, who disappoint with their flourishing and espacially with their rate of blossoming, will lead to more and more surprises to the amount of sun-radiation most of the fuchsias tolerate or need. And that best in locations with mild direct sunlight in the morning or evening-sun.   I can really recommend this “trial and...

Every Fuchsia has its Name!

Every Fuchsia has its Name!

25 years ago i owned some nice Fuchsias, their colors red and white in different variations, being presented on my balcony. Up to 15years ago i did not know about any other differentiation’s. Visiting the most marked-gardens or even super-marked, you wount find any other diversification such as  “Fuchsia-Hybrid”- upright or hanging. A little bit further might lead a classification of the blossom on the label: “simple”, “half-filled” or “filled”. This fuzziness in the declaration can be...
