Fuchsie De Oelewappers – Fuchsia of the Week 11/2014

Some Fuchsias are- luckily- more lovely then expected by their name! The imaginative and diligent breeder Marcel Michiels from Belgium crossbred the two hybrids “Tresco” and “Danny Kaye”, naming the resultant cultivar “De Oelewappers” and introducing it 2005. This was a bold combination, though “Danny Kaye” is not an easy-care fuchsia.     Out of curiosity i looked up the translation of this unusual name in the www and was quite astonished: “Oelewappers” means nincompoop,...

Fuchsia WALZ Bombardon – Fuchsia of the Week 10/2014

Today is carnival, a crazy day, and best suited to that is a merry Fuchsia like WALZ Bombardon!   The dutch breeder introduced this cultivar 2001 and stated, that the mother-plant is WALZ Harp, a hybrid from 1988, but the father is unknown… and that is, as well, sometimes to be seen  at carnival in other cases. The Fuchsia does not only like bright, but more than that sunlight places best and is quite tolerant to rain and windy conditions, blossoming abundantly. The long tubes of the blossoms are quite attractive, and the corollas are...

Fuchsia Chang – Fuchsia of the Week 09/2014

This week starts with a lot of sunshine, and therefore a Fuchsia that loves the sun, as “Chang”, is quite fitting! This cultivar was breeded by the Couple Hazard in the USA and introduced in 1946. As stated by experts, they likely used the Section F. splendens for hybridization, or F. cordifolia. Anyway, the Fuchsia Chang with its multiple pagoda-form blossoms is shining with a striking orange color.   The cultivar is growing quite fast with inflexible, longish sprouts and has to be pruned regularly to achieve a bushy plant,...

Fuchsia Murru’s Perfecta – Fuchsia of the week 8/2014

Nomen est Omen, that´s the case with this Fuchsia! This perfect beauty we ow to the diligence of the gardener Victoire Murru from Belgium. He crossbred two cultivars of his former breedings- some years old: Marie-Thérèse Paring- given the name of his wife- and Vicmarther. Obviously this new hybrid pleased him that much that he introduced it as “Murrus Perfecta” 1999.   Without any exaggeration: Anyone who will have a look at that Fuchsia will be most delighted! But this has to be achieved with patience and endurance, because...

Fuchsia Zets Alpha – Fuchsia of the week 7/2014

Fuchsias of the Group Triphylla-Hybrids are very special! The Fuchsia Zets Alpha is cultivar of this group, crossbred by the Dutch breeder Z. Stoel from the cultivars Fuchsia volcanica and the Hybrid Citation from USA, and was introduced 1993. The elegance of the leafs, combined with the very long tubes makes this plant very impressive. The lineage of the Triphylla species is prominent in this cultivar. Like the most of the Tryphillas it is growing bushy and tolerates direct sunlight. But Zets Alpha is growing faster then the other...

Fuchsia Burgi’s Kurti – Fuchsia of the Week 6/2014

Blue Fuchsias of this kind and this eager to blossom are rarely to be found.         . The successful fuchsia enthusiast and breeder Burgi Klemm-Vorau from Austria introduced 2010 the beautiful Burgi’s Kurti, a crossbreed between the both cultivars Cheltenham and Cliff’s Own. Burgi’s Kurti is growing upright and does tolerate sun, changing the color of the sepals  in that case from white to pink. The significant blue of the corolla is maintained, and therefore it stands out explicitly from other Fuchsias...

Fuchsia Schneeflocke – Fuchsia of the week 5/2014

The Fuchsia Schneeflocke (Snow Flake) fits to the onset of winter in Germany this week Same as the winter is not quite hard this season in our part of Germany, this Fuchsia is not completely white, but also expresses pink colors on the tubes and the basis of the petals, and the blossoms are at last medium size. These aspects turns the viewer more to some “warm” feelings than to chilling frost. The german breeder J. Jehle introduced this Fuchsia 1995, but unfortunately gave no informations about the lineage....

Fuchsia Cherry – Fuchsia of the week 4/2014

Obeisance to Wolfram Goetz   This well renown german Fuchsia-breeder died a few days ago. This is sad news. But his cultivars remain with us, pleasing us with an early blossoming in abundance- if the plant is properly nourished-, above that being of a merry appearance. This zest for life should forever been accompanied with him!   About 1994 he crossbreeded the Fuchsia-cultivars Lisi and Fenja, waiting until 1997 to present the new cultivar to the public, naming it Cherry for good reason.           Among the...

Fuchsia Dancing Flame – Fuchsia of the week 3/2014

Fuchsia Dancing Flame: Californian beauty, loving sun. Mrs. A. Stubbs cross-breeded the both hybrids Novella and Applause, and the result is this lovely flower in exceptional orange hues. The outer petals show stripes in different shades. This swinging pattern caused her to choose the name Dancing Flame in 1981. And- of course- this Fuchsia belongs to the hybrids who fancy sunshine! The plant should be cut back in time to prevent long, stiff shoots without leaves and blossoms.                ...

Fuchsia Mission Bells – Fuchsia of the week 2/2014

Since the be beginning of the 2. calendar-week falls on Epiphany, i will dedicate a “solemnly” Fuchsia to this week: Mission Bells, bred by Walker & Jones from the USA, known since 1948. About the lineage i do not hold any knowledge, but about their performance: it flourishes splendous in the half-shade, does tolerate a few ours direct sunlight. The shoots are a bit rigid and should be supported to carry the weight of the blossoms and to stand the wind. The blossoms are quote bell-like, with a lovely bright colour. Do you...
