Fuchsie De Oelewappers – Fuchsia of the Week 11/2014

Some Fuchsias are- luckily- more lovely then expected by their name!

The imaginative and diligent breeder Marcel Michiels from Belgium crossbred the two hybrids “Tresco” and “Danny Kaye”, naming the resultant cultivar “De Oelewappers” and introducing it 2005. This was a bold combination, though “Danny Kaye” is not an easy-care fuchsia.

Out of curiosity i looked up the translation of this unusual name in the www and was quite astonished: “Oelewappers” means nincompoop, and that is not really a compliment. But this Fuchsia really does deserve some compliments, blossoming lovely in abundance, treated right. The tips have to be cut back regularly, though this plant grows stout sprouts without branching out by its own. The blossoming will therefore start a bit delayed, but will continue well to the frost.

What did Marcel Michiels move towards naming this cultivar with that name? Maybe i will ask him or his daughter about that visiting the Nursery Michiels this spring.
